Jon Jones vows to take UFC heavyweight title from Francis Ngannou: ‘If you think you are going to run through America, you are wrong’

As if Jon Jones needed anymore motivation to fight Francis Ngannou, apparently now he’s doing it for America?

Jones rattled off a minor tweet flurry on Thursday, targeting the UFC heavyweight champion with a series of messages capped off by a vow to bring the heavyweight title back to the U.S. (Ngannou was born in Cameroon and he began his fighting career in France).

“The Predator” won the belt with the Las Vegas-based Xtreme Couture team in his corner, but that apparently matters little to Jones, who said he wrote, “The greatest title in the world is coming back to the greatest country in the world.”

Jones also added, “If you think you are going to run through America, you are wrong.”

Jones’ tweets don’t seem to specify what comments Ngannou may have made recently to set him off, but Ngannou did recently suggest that he would defend his title against Jones first and then pursue a boxing bout with Tyson Fury.

A UFC heavyweight championship bout has been discussed publicly between Jones and Ngannou since 2019, but seems unlikely to occur anytime soon with the negotiations having reached a standstill according to UFC President Dana White. White has suggested that top contender Derrick Lewis is most likely to be Ngannou’s first challenger. Lewis holds a decision win over Ngannou from UFC 226 in July 2018.
